John Zinsser  .  Zinsser often begins work on a picture by applying color in blobs an loops over a monochrome ground, then dragging the paint bands with knife, or stamping a grid into it with a metal plate. The canvas starts out looking handmade and ends up looking mechanical. (...)

Exhibition ‚Conceptual Abstraction’ Hunter College NY

In the exhibition ‚Feelings of Knowing’, John Zinsser shows works on paper and paintings on canvas. In the series ‚Language and Letters’, Zinsser chooses index files as the ground to paint on. Warm yellows and traces of white are applied with visible brush marks. Semi-circles and rectangles. Alongside its grid, each sheet receives ist own abstract figure. The elements of reduced colour and form meet the element of time in the form of the past the index files once held. Arranged in a line or a grid, these works speak their rhythm and communicate to the viewer in a changing code of individual expression and as elements of the larger group.

Katrin Hotz  .  For Katrin Hotz, drawing equals thinking – not in the sense of processing experience or ordering thoughts but as an expression of a non-linear meshwork of these. In this process, images are found intuitively by examination of and concentration on subconscious levels of perception. With their manifold connections, the resulting images resemble rhizomes, organic as they are in their appearance (...) The drawings of Katrin Hotz are always arrived at by working in layers, each of which reacts to the one that came before. In this way, the process of creation of these pieces is given emphasis. The results are unpredictable and come about in a state not unlike the one in ‚écriture automatique’ (automatic writing), in which the subconscious provides the operating principle.
