A Place for the image . What might the chair say to the colours red, black and brown and what has the white paper support, the background, got to do with it all? Maybe they’re all talking at the same time, yelling at each other; maybe they can’t, or don’t want to, understand each other. Who knows.
When art is at its best, all hierarchies which otherwise govern our society and, therefore, our personal existence, are cancelled in a individual work of art. That’s to say, everything becomes equally important, foreground and background no longer have to fight each other, blue isn’t better than red, what counts is the whole piece, everything together – it’s binary code, 0 or 1.
A pregnant woman goes to see her doctor. She is worried because her due date has long passed. The doctor scans her belly then suddenly starts laughing loudly. Of course, the pregnant woman is indignant and demands an immediate explanation. The doctor says: “What’s going on in your belly is a sensation, you’re carrying triplets, all of them are male, already have beards and want to come out desperately. The only problem is that each of them, when it is his turn, says to the next one: “After you, sir.”
This anecdote of Yiddish origin illustrates an essential aspect of contemporary art practice, namely the place where art takes place: in-between the chairs and thus in the still uncharted present. Exactly now.
