In an age in which the senses (eyes and ears, above all) are so much beguiled by virtual realities, a conjunction of the wonderful with concrete and material – by which, in this case, I mean the matière of paint, within which the union takes place – represents perhaps our sole remaining hope of finding a painting that can profess to represent visual reality in any form without lapsing into hopeless nostalgia.
